Ring Care 101: Protecting the Piece That Holds Your Story
Your ring is going to go everywhere with you — the gym, the kitchen, long flights, ordinary Tuesdays. Here's how to keep it looking the way it did the day you first put it on.
Daily Habits That Actually Help
- Take it off for heavy-duty tasks. Cleaning, gardening, lifting weights — anything that puts your hands through repeated impact can loosen stones or scratch metal over time.
- Skip the lotion and hairspray. Both can build up a film on your stone that dulls its sparkle. Put your ring on last, after your routine, not before.
- Store it separately. Tossed in a drawer with other jewelry, metal-on-metal contact causes scratches. A soft pouch or a lined box keeps it protected.
Cleaning It At Home
Warm water, a few drops of mild dish soap, and a soft-bristled toothbrush will handle most day-to-day buildup. Gently brush around the setting, rinse, and dry with a lint-free cloth. Skip ultrasonic cleaners unless a jeweler tells you your specific setting can handle them — some stones and settings are more delicate than others.
Get It Checked, Not Just Cleaned
Once a year, have a jeweler check the setting — prongs loosen gradually, long before you'd notice on your own. It's a five-minute check that prevents the moment nobody wants: realizing a stone is missing.
This ring is carrying more than a diamond. A little maintenance keeps the story intact, too.
